Opening Hours
Maitland Wellness Centre is proud to bring trusted, evidence-based natural health services to the Port Stephens region. Our experienced team of AHPRA-registered practitioners is here to support the health and wellbeing of residents from Nelson Bay, Medowie, Anna Bay, Salamander Bay, Tanilba Bay, Lemon Tree Passage and surrounding communities.
We offer a warm, professional environment where every patient is truly heard. Our practitioners take a whole-person approach, addressing not just symptoms but the underlying causes, using a blend of Traditional Chinese Medicine and evidence-informed modern practice.
Our acupuncture practitioners are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and hold university qualifications in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture is used to treat a broad range of conditions including chronic pain, arthritis, neuropathy, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, headaches, migraines, stress, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, digestive disorders and hormonal imbalance. Whether you are a local resident or visiting the Port Stephens area, our team can provide effective, personalised care.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) addresses the root cause of health conditions rather than just managing symptoms. Our practitioners draw on thousands of years of clinical tradition, combined with modern safety and evidence standards, to create personalised herbal formulas and treatment plans. TCM is particularly effective for digestive complaints, hormonal imbalance, immune function, chronic fatigue and conditions that have not responded well to conventional treatment.
Our remedial massage therapists work with patients managing soft tissue injuries, muscle tightness and tension, postural pain, repetitive strain, sports injuries and recovery from surgery or physical activity. Remedial massage is also highly effective for stress-related tension and ongoing body aches from sedentary or physically demanding work. It can be used as a standalone therapy or combined with acupuncture and TCM for a more comprehensive treatment approach.
Naturopathy combined with acupuncture offers a powerful integrative approach to chronic health conditions. Our naturopathic services address digestion, immune function, energy, hormonal health and nervous system support, using nutritional therapy, herbal medicine and lifestyle guidance alongside acupuncture and TCM.
Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points to release deep muscle tension and reduce localised pain. It is particularly effective for neck pain, shoulder pain, lower back pain, sports injuries and conditions involving tight or overactive muscle groups. Ask our practitioners about the clinical distinctions between dry needling and acupuncture to find out which approach is best suited to your situation.
Cupping and gua sha are Traditional Chinese Medicine techniques that promote circulation, reduce inflammation and support recovery from musculoskeletal pain and injury. Cupping creates gentle suction on the skin to release tension in the underlying tissue, while gua sha uses firm strokes to stimulate circulation and reduce stiffness. Both are commonly used alongside acupuncture for enhanced pain relief outcomes.
Moxibustion uses the gentle warmth of burning dried mugwort (moxa) applied to acupuncture points to promote circulation, ease chronic pain and support digestive and gynaecological health. Heat therapy is particularly beneficial for conditions involving cold, stagnation or chronic low-grade pain that worsens in cooler weather.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong are gentle movement practices that support joint health, balance, flexibility, stress management and cardiovascular wellbeing. Regular Tai Chi practice is strongly recommended for patients managing arthritis, chronic pain, fatigue and age-related conditions. Bjorn incorporates Tai Chi-based exercises into many treatment plans as a practical self-care tool patients can use at home between clinic visits.
Our practitioners integrate mindfulness-based approaches into treatment to help patients manage stress, anxiety, chronic pain and emotional difficulties. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques are practical, evidence-supported tools that complement acupuncture and TCM treatment by supporting the nervous system between sessions.
Our team of practitioners brings decades of combined clinical experience to every patient encounter. All acupuncturists are AHPRA-registered and university-qualified, with ongoing Continuing Professional Development across a range of conditions and treatment modalities.
Bjorn founded Maitland Wellness Centre in 2000 and brings over 35 years of experience in acupuncture, remedial massage, mindfulness and Tai Chi. He is now in his 30th year as a practising acupuncturist, with a clinical focus on pain management and stress relief. Bjorn combines acupuncture with gentle movement-based exercises and mindfulness tools that patients can use at home between sessions.
Lauren brings more than 20 years of experience as a midwife and nurse to her acupuncture practice, with a particular focus on women's health. She has supported countless women through fertility treatment, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, perimenopause and menopause, integrating the best of Western medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine into her practice. Lauren also treats men and women seeking relief from pain and other health conditions.
Neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, headaches. Pain takes many forms and it wears you down over time. At Maitland Wellness Centre, our Port Stephens patients have access to acupuncture, remedial massage, dry needling and TCM as effective alternatives or complements to pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Joint and muscle pain, arthritis, neuropathy and sports injuries all respond well to our treatments. Bjorn can guide you through gentle Tai Chi and movement exercises that, practised for a few minutes each day, can help restore ease and freedom of movement. After an initial assessment, our practitioners will be honest with you about whether acupuncture is likely to help and will suggest other options if appropriate.
