What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy to refers conditions where there is damage to the nerves. Signs and symptoms of neuropathy depends on what nerves are affected, what is causing the damage and what parts of the body is affected. The most common areas affected are the hands and feet and this is referred to as Peripheral Neuropathy.

Some of the most common symptoms of Neuropathy includes:

Pain

Altered sensations such as a feeling of “pins and needles” or tingling

Numbness that may be in some fingers or toes or include the whole hands and / or feet

A burning sensation

Shooting pain or pain that feels like an electric shock

A loss of strength or movement

Causes of Neuropathy.

Many different medical conditions may cause Neuropathy and it is important to get it checked by your Medical Doctor if you experience any altered nerve sensations so that any underlying medical conditions can be  identified and addressed.

Some of the most common causes of Neuropathy are Diabetes and Chemotherapy but often there is no obvious cause of the problem. This is known as Idiopathic Neuropathy.

Medical Treatments

While medical treatments for any underlying cause of Neuropathy is important there are currently no medications available that can regenerate damaged nerves.

The most common medications used for Neuropathy are various forms of pain medication to help alleviate the symptoms. Ant-seizure and antidepressant medication can also be tried to reduce the symptoms.

Other treatments that may be used include spinal cord stimulation, surgery and physical therapy among others depending on the type and of the Neuropathy.

These points are selected by your practitioner through a thorough diagnosis of your condition along Chinese Medical principles. This also takes into account any Western Medical diagnosis you may have from your GP or Specialist for your complaint. By combining 2000 years of documented medical experience with the latest in modern research your Acupuncturists are in a unique position to select the best from both worlds.
