Massage – What to Expect?

Massage

Massage is the application of long, smooth strokes, kneading, and other movements focused on superficial and deep layers of muscle using massage oil or lotion.  Massage therapists manually apply pressure via tension, pressing, or stretching to muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints, lymphatic vessels, or the gastrointestinal system, depending on your complaint and the location of your condition.

Massage can help to reduce pain and stiffness in muscles and joints

Massages can relieve muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, decreases motor-neuron excitability (overly stressed nerves), and helps clear lactic acid and other waste from the soft tissues, reducing pain and stiffness in the muscles and associated joints.  Massage can be very useful to alleviate the symptoms of a wide number of complaints, including:

  • sports injury
  • pregnancy related muscular pain
  • repetitive strain type injuries
  • post-surgery recovery, and more.

It is thought that massage therapy works by increasing blood circulation to affected areas, thereby bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues.

Stress relief and relaxation as a result of massage

Massage is also very useful in general relaxation and stress relief, as it may also lower the body’s stress response by clearing out levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, and by increasing levels of the ‘happy hormone’ oxytocin.

There are many different types of massage, and our practitioners are taught in several different schools, including reflexology and remedial massage.  Half hour, full hour and 1.5 hour massages are available at our clinic, depending on your requirements.

Assessment of your health and condition before massage therapy

When you first visit the clinic, you will be asked to fill out initial intake forms, which will be discussed with you by your therapist.  Any concerns you may have regarding your treatment will be addressed, and the therapist will adjust their treatment accordingly. Most typically, massage is conducted with you partially undressed, but the therapist will drape with towels to maintain your privacy and warmth. Depending on your condition, and the type of massage you have requested, you may also receive cupping as part of your treatment.

Following treatment, a treatment plan may be discussed with you, depending on your particular complaint and circumstances.

Please contact us if you have any further queries about massage and massage therapy.
