Moxibustion is the smouldering of a dried herb (Mugwort) near, (approximately 1 to 3 cm from), the surface of the skin. The aim is to induce a gentle warming sensation and the exact distance is determined by the heat felt by the patient. This method of treatment is used according to Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis to stimulate the energy (or Qi) flow, introduce heat into the body where there is a disorder of excessive cold or insufficient warmth, warm the muscles and removes blockages of energy flow. It is sometimes used in place of acupuncture needles.
